Spatial Computing with Apple Vision Pro

Your Apps Live in Your Space

According to Apple, with Vision Pro, you have an infinite canvas that transforms how you use the apps you love. Arrange apps anywhere and scale them to the perfect size, making the workspace of your dreams a reality — all while staying present in the world around you. Browse the web in Safari, create a to-do list in Notes, chat in Messages, and seamlessly move between them with a glance.

An immersive way to experience entertainment.

Vision Pro can transform any room into your own personal theater. Expand your movies, shows, and games up to the perfect size while feeling like you’re part of the action with Spatial Audio. And with more pixels than a 4K TV for each eye, you can enjoy stunning content wherever you are — whether that’s a long flight or the couch at home.

What’s the Reaction IRL?

According to VR Tech and Tyriel Wood the Vision Pro is an awesome piece of technology (with some concerning feature details, hidden for now). He provides a thorough review and breakdown via his YouTube channel.

Where Apple excels, and others either miss, is in it’s ability to ‘passthrough’ or seamlessly blend the real and the virtual world, positioning the product as more AR/XR than VR. The design aesthetic is of course uniquely apple as well, with attention to detail from fit, ergonomic and materials. In addition to physical design Apple has also taken into account unique features that allow for an easy on the eyes transition between headset use and the natural environment. When using the headset in a lit room, and removing the Vision Pro there is almost no pupil adjustment time required.

Apple EyeSight also allows for a wearer’s eyes to be projected onto the outside, to allow for more natural interactions with others.

The main interface is enabled via infrared technology and eye tracking and gestures, with many of them being familiar paradigms built on other gesture based interactions we’re familiar with from iOS and macOS. While the context or use case for particular apps you’re using might be a better fit for another device, reading a PDF document for example might be better left to the tablet.

It appears that productivity apps seem to work well, however gaming apps, unless strategy games, are still a little rough and have latency issues with touch interactions. In terms of comfort and weight it’s also coming in better than competitors and offers a minuscule battery back that can fit in your pocket, where others require you to be wired in or worse wearing a backpack.

Apple plans to make the product available in early 2024, it will be exciting to watch and see how things develop and accelerate in this space.
